NC Baptist All-State Youth Choir in Concert

NC Baptist All-State Youth Choir in Concert

While many of their peers are heading to the beach or sunning by the pool, 69 NC Baptist teens are hard at work honing their vocal skills and learning new songs as they prepare for All-State Youth Choir concerts July 15-22. The teens and 14 staff members will go on tour presenting concerts and doing ministry projects throughout the week. The youth, who are in grades 9-12 and active members of worship and music ministries from 28 NC Baptist churches, auditioned for the honor.

Through the rehearsals, tour and various ministry projects, ASYC lives out its Mission Statement of “Supporting and encouraging youth choir ministry in North Carolina churches by offering worship and discipleship through performance opportunities, musical development and leadership development while striving for excellence in musicianship, resulting in changed lives.”

This is the 20th year of the NC Baptist All-State Youth Choir. The planning and preparations for this choir and tour have been going on for an entire year.

Students and staff spend a week together working hard to learn music, grow spiritually, and give of themselves in ministry across the state of North Carolina. They make lifelong friendships, laugh and cry together, play together, share in ministry together and sing a lot! The group will meet for the first time on Sunday evening July 15 to rehearse together and by Wednesday night they present their first concert with 13 songs memorized. Anyone is welcome to attend one of the free concerts. The concert schedule is listed below.

During the week, the group has the opportunity to learn and live out the theme, “Foundation,” based on 1 Corinthians 3:11, reminding us “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid which is Jesus Christ.”

ASYC Coordinator, Phil Campbell, Pastor of Music and Worship at First Baptist Lincolnton, tells the students, “You have been given this opportunity to strengthen your faith and your relationship with God as you hold on to Him as your foundation. He is holding on to you. Your relationship with Him will change and it will grow beyond measure. Make this week what you want it to be. Give it to God and He will change your life in ways you could never have imagined. His perfect plan designed just for you may be revealed to you in many ways during this week if you are listening.

“Allow God to help you become a better musician, a faithful friend, a loving listener and, most of all, a Christian with a strong foundation. I challenge you to pray and allow God to work in your life to make the changes that He has planned for you from this day forward.”

Community ministry projects vary from year to year. After one outreach, a student wrote, “Today we had the opportunity to work with the homeless and the less fortunate. We were able to wash their feet for them and provide them with new shoes. The love that was shown today was so breathtaking and touching… just so hard for me personally to describe.” This year’s tour includes stops at a retirement community, a children’s home, a mini-concert at a tourist attraction and more.

Many students eagerly comment on how being part of the ASYC has impacted their lives. One student writes, “It’s my final year at All-State. I’m really going to miss all of my friends here, because for some reason—in only one short week—we become greater friends than most. So as I go off to college, I go fully prepared, because of the lessons, truths, and friends that I have gained at All-State. What a wonderful experience.” Another says, “I encourage those who have considered trying out, considered joining the choir:  Do it. Try it. It’s exhausting but all in all, well worth it.”
